Iraq declared the recapture of all territories held by Islamic State militants late 2017, but the militants have continued to target security forces and civilians at more than one occasion. The United Nations says more than 8000 Iraqis were either killed or wounded in violence and armed conflicts throughout 2017.
Islamic State militants, and al-Qaeda before them, have carried out scores of bombings against civilians as they seek to destabilize the country and expand their territory. However, Friday night’s blast was the biggest in Iraq since the group announced its self-declared state a year ago.
Two massive car bombings in central Baghdad have killed at least 31 people Tuesday, Iraqi officials report. The Islamic State is claiming responsibility for one of the attacks, which took place just days after the start of Ramadan, the Islamic fasting month.
An Islamic State militant group (ISIS) cell, dressed in police uniforms, launched a coordinated suicide bomb and gun assault overnight on the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit, killing at least 31 people. Ten or more ISIS fighters, commandeering a police vehicle, entered the city 109 miles north of Baghdad.
